Chapter Eight (1993) is a setting of part of the Canticum Canticorum, King Solomon's Song of Songs, written with Knaifel's cello teacher, Mstislav Rostropovich, in mind. The work is the antithesis of a concerto and Knaifel describes it in an unusual way, as being "for church, choirs and a cello"
The choirs form a cross in the church, a children's choir before the altar, a mixed choir at the back of the church, male and female choirs to the right and the left, the cellist at the centre. The hour-long piece moves with implacable, slow gentleness, the cello placed in the limelight for "an act of humility, a manifestation of sacrificial, self-crucifying love".


An internet friend of mine once stated that composers from Russia and the Baltic states would create either orthodox music or avant-garde, no way in between. If this is true, then perhaps Knaifel's interpretation of the biblical Song of Songs is an exception to the rule: this strange, slow moving choral work seems to have a bit of both worlds.
The booklet contains an interview with Knaifel and Rostropovich.
