This new album of original music appears some 45 years after C+B started out, and 11 years since their last album of new songs, 1998's "Dancing Bear". It's a blues album through and through, with excellent production courtesy of Daniel Lohues (an accomplished blues guitarist/vocalist in his own right). Lohues also writes much of the music.
It's a contemporary record, where Harry Muskee's lyrics are about the world in the 21st century; e.g. "Baghdad Blues", a caustic view of the Iraq war ("They wanna bring democracy at the barrel of a gun"), or "Devil Made Religion", a perceptive assessment of religion's role in "planting evil into men").
There's also a tribute to the late, great Herman Brood, the original Blizzards keyboard player ("Mama buy me a dream"). Herman went on to become a successful solo artist, and was known for the excesses of his lifestyle almost as much as his music.
"Low Country Blues" is a highlight, slightly reminiscent of "Window of my Eyes", and a great blues song. Also, check out "I'm in your corner", as beautiful a ballad as C+B ever recorded.
Overall, a satisfying album, with Muskee showing creativity in his lyrics, and all members of the band displaying great musicianship. Cover photography courtesy of Anton Corbijn. Really enjoyable.
