Originally, David Coverdale took band mates Jon Lord and Ian Paice with him to kick off what would be a successful sojourn down the rock 'n' path to stardom. What would happen after their departure changed the groups' fortunes, literally. Coverdale would go it alone with an influx of new and younger talent after the exit of his longtime partners. The group had a new sleek mainstream sound that perpetuated a consistent pumping out of hit after hit. Despite several lineup changes, accidents, and then Coverdale losing his voice forcing him to miss a year of performing, they weathered the storm and were one of the most successful rock acts of the 80's.
