Musical production for the most part was devoted to opera, only a small amount of religious or instrumental music being composed. Therefore church music did not develop its own style but followed that of opera, this process continuing through Rossini and Donizetti to Verdi. Cimarosa followed this tradition: he composed about 80 works, mostly opere buffe, fewer than ten sacred works, and only a few instrumental works. Success soon came his way, and his fame spread through Italy and beyond. Stendhal and Goethe both admired him. Because his earnings remained meagre despite the feverish work and great successes, Cimarosa decided to follow the example of Galuppi, Traetta, and Paisiello, who had returned to Italy after only a few years' service at the court of Catherine II of Russia, laden with gifts and coins. Through the Duke of Serra Capriola, the minister for Naples and Sicily accredited to the Russian court, he was invited to St. Petersburg, where he arrived on December 2, 1787.
